Sending electronic cards, or free ecards, has risen in popularity over the past few years, and provide an innovative, modern way to send greetings.

For anyone who isn't familiar with this type of greeting card, an ecard is produced graphically on a computer, and can be sent to anyone in the world over the internet.

There are so many benefits to sending a greetings card this way. Sending information over the internet is free, and so there is no postage charge, which can often be quite expensive when applied to a traditional card sending long-haul by airmail. But possibly a card sent in this manner's greatest asset is environmental.

The irony was, people who cared about the environment would of course not want to create extra environmental damage in this way.

Environmental campaigners have called for the reduction of paper waste for a long time now, but there are other benefits to sending free ecards than simply helping the environment. Businesses are striving to push their 'green' credentials, and it's very fashionable to be synonymous with all things environmentally friendly.
